Idle Worship – Commercial Work

March 20th, 2012 § 5 Comments

Usually I don’t like to share too much about my commercial work, but I thought this was worth bringing up since it was a small chunk of my life.  (Don’t worry, I’ll never abandon gallery stuff for industry, NEVER!!  Gallery/personal work will always be my heart.  Sadly, commercial job still pays the bills a lot easier, but if you’re lucky– the project can be fun, like my current job at Loot Drop : ).)

In 2009-2011, I worked for Idle Games, on a game called “Idle Worship”.  It released March 14th.  I created the overall art look (excluding the mudling character) and color palate with the help of an AMAZING art team/friends to work with: Mary Shu, Lam Giang, Lamnho Giang, Pui Chung, Trung Lac, Guillermo Martinez, Fabian Molina, and Emily Barrera.  Holy crapazoids, these guys are talented!  Here are a couple selected things I did there (Sorry if you have been on this page earlier, a few pages have been requested for temporary removal and will return…possibly one day.). Finally launched after 2 + years in production.  Here’s a screenshot of what the game looks like in the beginning.  I did everything on this playable screen (not UI), excluding the hut building, which Pui did a great job on and tofu guy in a bowl, one of my favorite Moai’s that Mary did.

I did a couple Moais, but this one never made it into the game.  I think it was my favorite of the bunch too haha–but apparently it was too “creepy” : P  Cake man, you will live on!! Through the internet!

Things you can place on your island. (remember to click on images to enlarge and unblur)

Goth themed items.

Some animals.  If you play far enough, you’ll be rewarded with my unicorn haha (designed it, but Lamn ho did a great job painting it : ) (unicorn image taken from a website):

Stole this screen grab from online– a pic that shows our art team’s collaborative efforts : ).  When you play long enough, your game can look like this.  Looks like that’s all I’m allowed to share for now—ONWARD oil painting!

(Click image to enlarge and UNBLUR–why WordPress, why!)

It’s been far too long without any updates!  I’ve been really busy juggling my job, gallery stuff, & life, so it’s been pretty tough to show stuff that I’m allowed to!  So, meanwhile, let me show you a page of “commercial” work that I did maybe.. 2 or 3 months ago.  Usually, I try to keep work & gallery stuff separate, but these kind of share some parallel to my gallery stuff, so YAh, LOOK AT.  Maybe I’ll share more of this sort…if I keep…not updating my blog : X.  Oh, and have a Happy New Years : )!!

Things to look forward to in February:  1. Dark Pop Show at Last Rites Gallery (NYC)  2. Femme Fatale at Cella Gallery (LA)

October Show

Bad Romance, 11″x14″, oil on illustration board, 2011

Hello!  I’m going to be part of a large group show (100+ artists!!) based on music videos, currated by Chris Marrs Piliero (a music video director, who has done videos for Black Keys, Britney Spears, Kesha, etc.) and Dave MacDowell (an awesome gallery artist who does a lot of Pop Culture referenced works).  I ended up choosing to do 2 Lady Gaga pieces because I’m a big fan of her visually : ).  Choosing Bad Romance was a bit of a tribute for Alexander Mcqueen, one of my, if not, my favorite fashion designers that had passed away last year. “Bad Romance” and “You and I” , will be showing at Meltdown Gallery (Hollywood, CA) from Oct 7- 20 in a show called “I Want my Music Video Art Show”. Here’s the flyer info. Opening Reception is Oct 7, 8- 12amm 7522 Sunset Blvd. Hollywood, CA 90046. If you’re interested a piece, please contact: (323) 851-7223 or staff@meltcomics.com

Brief update

August 30th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

(Need to click image to make it less blurry) This figure painting was done in July, but never completed since quite a few sessions were missed (cancelled class, model taking a day off, and a day out of town)  Here, I tried a new approach for figure painting—transfer drawing method!  The idea is to draw out the whole model on paper, and transfer the drawing onto canvas.  Then, paint it in w/out worrying about measuring things.  I’m not quite sure I like this method–since it feels a lot less intuitive and I kind of enjoy figuring out problems while painting, but I can see why some artists do it, as it can save a little time also.

I’ll be part of a music video gallery show next month!  So get ready ; ).

Happiness is based on “happening”.  What happens in your life, circumstances.  Joy isn’t based on situations and events, but on God, a dependable and constant being.
